So you might not know this about me but all of my paternal side are Sunnis so technically, since my father is a Muslim and I repudiate the hideous doctrines of Islam (along with all other religious doctrines), I could/would be considered an apostate, which in Islamic theology and law carries a death sentence.
Luckily, however, I live in a free and open secular, democratic society where I am not defined by an ideology but by my own individual merit and actions.
The Thursday after the Paris Attacks (Thurs 19 Nov 2015) the Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain (CEMB) started a fabulous campaign, #ExMuslimBecause, on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube etc. This hashtag has allowed thousands of ex-Muslims to ‘come out of the closet’ and share their stories and experiences as to why they left Islam and how they feel about the ideology.
As you can probably guess I cannot stand the ideology of Islam, not the political, legal, social or religious dimensions, none of it, so to see these brave people, who many could be killed for speaking out, come forward and tweet the hashtag and their stories was very moving and very amazing.
If you, or anyone you know, is looking to leave Islam, or another religion, just remember you are not alone. People leave religions all the time and because it is so hard to do there have been so many support groups created to help ‘apostates’ out.
Below are some of the ex-Muslim support groups but Google will lead you to other ex-religious groups too if you need a little support and solidarity 🙂
